More reasons to reach for an apple
Apples contain a range of bioactive compounds, and some of these chemicals might be beneficial in preventing certain diseases associated with obesity, such as long-term inflammation in the bowel due to a disturbed microbiotic balance. The tart Granny Smith variety has a particularly high content of nondigestible compounds, which pass through the digestive system unscathed until they reach the colon. Scientists fermented the faeces of obese mice with compounds from Granny Smith apples and discovered a positive change in the bacterial make-up, which ended up more similar to the bowel contents of lean, healthy mice.
