Three sentences on melting ice | Day 49

All this week, I’m practising three sentence science, as piloted by the online magazine Nautilus.

Earth’s gravity is changing due to ice loss

For the past four years, the European Space Agency’s satellite GOCE has been measuring Earth’s gravitational field in high-resolution detail, producing the most accurate gravity model scientists have ever had. While on its mission, the satellite also brought back data which confirms that Antarctica has lost so much ice over the past years, this decrease has even affected Earth’s gravity. While this change doesn’t impact the way we experience gravity anywhere on our planet, it is a grim reminder that global warming has set the Antarctic glaciers on a course of significant change. | ESA
